Testosterone and Aging

Androgen deficiency is a relatively common problem in older men. It is also thought to be responsible for many symptoms once considered to be the result of normal aging. About 1 in 5 older men have a total testosterone level that falls below the normal range. (See Testosterone Levels By Age).

However, many men, even those in the lower end of the normal range, still suffer from problems associated with low testosterone and could potentially benefit from testosterone replacement therapy. (See Symptoms of Low Testosterone)

ADAM Questionnaire: The Androgen Deficiency in Aging Males Test

The ADAM Questionnaire is a low testosterone test to help men decide if they should discuss their symptoms with their doctors. The standard questionnaire consists of 10 ‘yes or no’ questions concerning symptoms of androgen deficiency. These ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions identify symptoms associated with androgen deficiency. The ADAM questionnaire yields a positive result if you answer, “Yes,” to questions 1 or 7 or any of the last 3 questions. A positive result means that you may have low testosterone and should consult a physician.

Question Yes No
1.  Do you have a decrease in libido (sex drive)?
2.  Do you have a lack of energy?
3. Do you have a decrease in strength and/or endurance?
4.  Have you lost height?
5.  Have you noticed a decreased “enjoyment in life”?
6.  Are you sad and/or grumpy?
7.  Are your erections less strong?
8. Have you noticed a recent deterioration in your ability to play sports?
9.  Are you falling asleep after dinner?
10. Has there been a recent deterioration in your work performance?

Results

The ADAM questionnaire yields a positive result if you answer, “Yes,” to questions 1 or 7 or any of the last 3 questions. A positive result means that you may have low testosterone and should consult a physician. Your physician will discuss your symptoms and perform simple blood tests to determine whether your testosterone levels are low or not.
