Male Sexual Problems and Urinary Problems Introduction

Male Sexual Problems and Urinary Problems

Genitourinary (reproductive and urinary) problems increase in prevalence with aging. With the length of life expectancy in the US, the majority of men will probably be affected by a genitourinary problem during their lifetime.

The most common genitourinary problems include prostate cancer, benign prostate hyperplasia, erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory disorders, and urinary incontinence. While many men find these issues embarrassing, understanding these problems and addressing them with a physician can greatly help in their diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

How to Improve Sexual Function and Treat Reproductive and Urinary Problems

The first step to improved sexual function is improving one’s overall health. Proper diet and exercise are essential to maintaining sexual function, especially as one ages. (See Nutrition and Exercise). The next step is to get over any embarrassment and go see a doctor. There is nothing to be ashamed of, and primary care physicians deal with these problems on a daily basis.

Problems like obesity, smoking, inactivity, diabetes, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, low testosterone, depression and other psychiatric disorders, certain medications (especially antidepressant medications), and many others can lead to one or more of the manifestations of sexual dysfunction. Working with your doctor and associated healthcare personnel to correct these underlying problems through appropriate medications and lifestyle modifications is the ideal way to manage and improve sexual dysfunction.
